He was the beloved husband of Ginger McLendon Roper and was preceded in death by his parents, Isabella Vath Roper and Irven Moore Roper. He was the adored father of Randle James Roper, Staff Sergeant Stephen Joseph Roper, and Dr. Kristy Roper Kennedy, and the father-in-law of Crystal Burton Roper and Dr. Adam Monroe Kennedy. He was the cherished “Paw Paw” of 7 grandchildren, Austin, Brayden, Chase, Dayne, Ethan, Wally, and Lilly. Adam and Kristy are expecting his seventh grandson in April. He was the brother of Dick Roper, David Roper, Patsy St. Angelo, Joe Roper, Mary Cramer, and the late Charles and Bill Roper. Jim was actively involved in First United Methodist Church in Slidell and later at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis, TN. He served the church community in a variety of capacities. Jim was also involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Slidell High School and Memphis East High School. For his numerous contributions to the community, Jim was presented the Key to the City of Slidell by Mayor Webb Hart. His kindness and generosity defined him. He loved life, his family, his friends, and the LSU Tigers. Jim believed in excellence. He motivated and inspired everyone he knew to be their absolute best selves. Coach Roper will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by everyone, but his legacy will live on in the hundreds of lives he touched.
