Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2012/st1204.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Calvin Lionel Harrison, or, “Skeet” as he was known by many, was born Jan. 15, 1933 to the late Calvin Eugene and Mary Magdalene Harrison, in Slidell. He was the seventh of their 12 children. Calvin received Christ at an early age at Hartzell Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Indian Village, under the late Rev. Leroy Fields. After returning back to Slidell to live in 2010, he reunited his membership under Pastor Earnest Scott. Calvin completed his early education in the Indian Village public school, and attended high school at the St. Tammany Parish Training School in Slidell, Louisiana. During his senior year in high school, he decided to enlist in the U.S. Navy. After completing his basic training, he served aboard the USS Salsbury Sound AV-13 for 18 months, where he later received orders to go to Sasebo, Japan. While on duty in Japan, he met his late wife, Asako (Betty) Uehara. When his duty was completed, he returned to Slidell and enrolled in night school while working during the day. He also began to pursue a boxing career in New Orleans, His desire was to become a professional boxer. However, as faith would have it, he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent back to Japan in March, 1956. Shortly afterwards, he and Betty were married Dec, 30, 1957. In 1960, he and his wife returned to the United States. He was stationed aboard the USS Mt. Baker (AE-4). Later, he was sent back to Yokosuka, Japan for three and a half years. During this time, they adopted their daughter, Diane Kyoko (Kyoko Shinkawa). He later served aboard the Okimago (APA-ZZ). Last, but not least, he spent two years in South Vietnam. After this tour of duty, he retired Oct. 1, 1971, as a Chief Petty Officer with 20 years of service. Once again, he returned to the United States with his family. He lived for a short while in Compton, Calif., and later in Slidell, where he and Betty operated a small grocery store in Indian Village. They relocated back to Compton while his daughter completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California. During this time, he went to work for the U.S. Navy Weapons station in Seal Beach, Calif., until 1995. Calvin received many honors and recognitions throughout his Navy career. They included, the Vietnam Campaign National Defense Service Medal; Navy Achievement Medal with Combat “V”; Vietnam Service Medal; Petty Officer Leadership Training in San Diego, Calif.; Intelligence Briefing and Counter Insurgency Orientation Familiarization, and Internal Security Guard School. Calvin and his wife, Betty, went back to Japan to live in 1995 and remained there until Betty passed away Aug. 8, 2010. Calvin returned to the states for her burial, and resided for about a year and a half with his brother, Thomas and his wife, Ruth, in Slidell. In November 2011, he went to live in Jacksonville, Fla., with his daughter and family. He was hospitalized due to failing health, March 19, 2012, and he made his transition to his eternal home April 6, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents, Calvin and Mary Harrison; five brothers, Henry, Leroy, Emanuel, Simon, Solomon “King”, and two sisters, Angeline Searcy and Clotiel Love. He leaves to mourn his memory, his daughter, Diane Kyoko Harrison; three granddaughters, Mollie, Rachel, and Sarah; one grandson, Richard “RJ”, one great-grandson, Jeffrey; three sisters, Vera Bell of Slidell, Jereldine Ducksworth of Compton, Calif., and Margie Miles (Billie) of Carson, Calif.; one brother, Thomas Harrison (Ruth) of Slidell; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Harrison, Sally Harrison, and Florel Harrison of Slidell, and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to the funeral service at 11 a.m. today at the Hartzell Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 41040 Highway 190 East, Slidell, with the Rev. Earnest Scott officiating. Interment will be at the Jackson Square Harrison Cemetery. Doyle’s Funeral Home of Slidell is in charge of arrangements. ===================
