Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2012/st1204.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== WILBUR LEY SMITH, JR, age 73 years, a native of Florida and a longtime resident of Slidell, LA, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2012. He was a graduate of Port St. Joe High School and a charter member of Long Avenue Baptist Church in Port St. Joe, FLA In 1961, he received a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University. Following graduation, he was employed by Boeing Space Program and was instrumental in the design of the Saturn Rocket. In 2001, he retired from Martin Marietta Space program. His name is recorded in the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institute for his contribution to the Saturn Space Program. Mr. Smith was a charter member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and as music director. An outdoorsman, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was an avid fisherman and duck hunter. Wilbur is preceded in death by his father, Wilbur Ley Smith, Sr., and an infant son, Wilbur Garrett Smith. Surviving him is his wife of 49 years, Hilda Jones Smith, formerly of Moss Point, MS, a son, Kendall Ley Smith(Lisa), a daughter, Laura Smith Bonnette(Philip), grandchildren, Kacey and Tyler Bonnette, Logan Smith, step granddaughters Marissa and Allie Oster, all of Slidell. He is also survived by his mother, Sybil Rowan Smith of Pascagoula, MS, a sister, June Smith Fairley(P.B.”Pete”) of Moss Point, MS, and nieces, Joyce Fairley Morris(Bud) and Teresa Fairley Barber of Pascagoula, MS. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Services at Grace Memorial Baptist Church, 58516 Pearl Acres Road, Slidell, LA, on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. Interment in FOREST LAWN CEMETERY. Visitation at the church on Friday after 9:00 A.M. until funeral time. Donations to the Grace Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Sallie Astor Burdine Breast Foundation, 17050 Medical Center Drive, 4th Floor, Baton Rouge, La. 70816, preferred, in lieu of flowers. ===================
