Gladys Mae Copeland was born on a beautiful April 29th late afternoon in 1936 
and departed on April 8, 2012, Easter Sunday morning.

She was a resident of New Orleans since the early 50s but relocated to Slidell 
in the early 70s. 

She founded Newsome’s Demolition Co., Inc. The company was a major entity in 
the demolition world and received the largest state issued contract ever 
awarded to a minority-owned company. The contract was for the demolition of all 
buildings related to the Tulane University expansion.

She was also the owner of Newsome Furniture and Flea Market, which was located 
on Gause Boulevard and Carol Road.

She is survived by Jimmie C. Copeland (brother); Leon G. Newsome (son); Yvonne 
Newsome Taylor (daughter); and grandchildren Kendrick Lewis, Kimberly Taylor, 
Emily Taylor, Senedra Newsome, Keonsha Davis, Dominique Newsome, Brittany 
Taylor, Nydia Newsome, Kendo Newsome and Corey Brown.

She regularly stated, “I do not serve Jehovah for everlasting life or what I 
may stand to gain. I serve him because I love him.”

Services are today at 1:30 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness, 1475 
Fremaux Ave., Slidell. A celebration of life is at 2 p.m. at Community Center 
off Carr Drive in Slidell at 267 Debbie Drive, Slidell.
