She was 96 years old. Born and raised on a farm in Prague, OK, she was the second of four children born to Talmadge and Mae Stricklin. The Stricklins moved to Modesto, California where Lena later joined them. While working in a Modesto drug store, Lena Mae caught the eye of a southern boy from Louisiana. After only weeks of persistent pursuit, Lena said yes to Jack Harris, who immediately dubbed her “Shug”, and they were soon married in Reno, Nevada. Jack and Shug spent years doodlebugging around the country and beyond before settling in New Orleans where they lovingly raised their three children, Ron Harris of Phoenix, Jeff Harris of Mandeville and Cheryl Blaize of Mandeville. Before retiring from Chevron, the couple moved to the Northshore’s Tchefuncta Estates in Covington then to Beau Chene in Mandeville where they lived until Jack’s death at the age of 92. Jack and Shug were happily married for 62 years, and “they said it wouldn’t last”. Shug is survived by her sister Merle Beckwith of Modesto, tons of nieces and nephews, her three children, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Shug enjoyed memberships in the Geophysical Society, Newcomers and Petroleum Wives, and in her last years, resided gracefully in the Windsor and Emeritis retirement facilities. She will be missed by all the friends she made. Shug was laid to rest with her beloved husband Jack at E.J. Fielding’s Funeral Home in Covington where her immediate family held a private gathering to celebrate her wonderful life. Donations in her honor can be sent to Hospice of St. Tammany, 725 W. 11th Ave., Covington, LA 70433. ===================
