She was a charter member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church where she was a dedicated nursery worker for 15+ years prior to retiring. She was a previous member and nursery worker of First Baptist Church of Slidell. In her early years, she worked at two Slidell landmark restaurants, The White Kitchen and St. Christopher’s Curve Inn. She was a homemaker who loved to cook and keep house. She even survived being struck by lightning while vacuuming during a thunderstorm in the year 2000. She was well known for her delicious pineapple coconut cakes and pecan pies baked with her very own special touch. Sometimes, her oven worked continuously baking pies to give away for special occasions, holidays, or just to be on the giving end. She especially enjoyed preparing a large meal and inviting friends and family over to enjoy. She also provided child care in her home, loving and treating each child as her very own and loved to shop for beautiful new clothes to give them. She even cared for children of parents with high profile careers including the FBI and Secret Service agents. One of the parents was one of Vice President Al Gore’s bodyguards. She became known as “Nana” by the children she kept, and kept that title even after the children were grown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. “Shorty” Slinker; her son, Karl K. Slinker; her sisters Helen P. Newbill, Edwina P. Whitfield, and Earline P. Penton; her brother, Carl E. Pichon; her father, Edwin J. Pichon; and her mother, Georgia Broom Pichon.
