The resident of Diamondhead, Miss., who was born in Natchez, Miss., had lived in the New Orleans and Slidell areas since the 1990s. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Madge Smith, and older sisters, Helen and Sarah Phillips and Suzie Dunevant. Raised primarily in the small town of Newbern, Tenn., during the Great Depression and WWII, he graduated from the Columbia military school in 1950 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He attended the now-named University of Memphis, where he was a Lambda Chi Alpha member. He worked in heavy industry, becoming an industrial salesman who ran several small businesses, including Bingo Mate of Louisiana, before retiring in 1999 to devote time to family, travel, fishing and Louisiana State University football games. He loved people, socializing and good food and had an abundance of patient and humor. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Mike Smith and Natalie Coker of Slidell, and Stacy Smith and Kelly Ward of The Woodlands, Texas; five grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be Aug. 11 at 3 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 360 Robert Blvd., Slidell. Internment will be private. Memorial donations requested in lieu of flowers to the United Methodist Committee of Emergency Relief, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087, or United Service Organizations at www.USO.org.
