Born Sept.12, 1921 in Bandung, on the island of Java in Indonesia, he was the only child of Dirk van Ameyden van Duym and Wilhelmina van de Water. After his naturalization as a U.S. citizen, he received his master’s degree in geology from the University of Missouri at Rolla, and began working as an exploration geologist for Shell Oil Company. In 1956 he and his family moved to Louisiana, and in 1960 settled in Covington. After retiring in 1981, Peter and Barbara started a blueberry farm, and between harvests they enjoyed many years of travel and elder-hosteling; their journeys ranged from bicycling in France to hiking in the Sierras to nature study in northern Wisconsin. In 2007, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Peter and Barbara moved to Oakwood Village Retirement Community in Madison, Wisc. His love of nature and environmental ethic served as a role model and inspired both his friends and family: daughter Diana (deceased) and son-in-law Paul, and their children Johanna and Natalia Kieniewicz, of the UK; son Dirk, daughter- in-law Sherry, of Mandeville and their children Suzanne, Marty, and Marena; and son Andy, daughter-in-law Anne, of Madison, Wisc. and their children Dirk and Raina. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 17 at 3 p. m. at the Northshore Unitarian Universalist Society in Lacombe. ===================
