Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2012/st1212.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Brother Abel Clement died peacefully at St. Paul’s School Community in Covington, LA at 2:20 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012. He was 97 years of age and a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers for 81 years. He was born in Jennings, LA, the son of the late Jules Clement and late Laurentine Guchereaux. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Ann Norris and Aline Hug. Brother is survived by his niece, Suzanne Guillory (Deryl), and three nephews Daren Guillory, Phil Hug and Michael Hug. In addition he is survived by his grand-niece Brandi Harwood and grand-nephew Daren Guillory. Abel entered the Juniorate in Lafayette, LA in June of 1928. He received the habit of the Christian Brothers on August 14, 1931 and made final Profession of Vows on August 15, 1940. Brother began his teaching ministry at Cathedral High School (Lafayette) in 1934. His many years of teaching ministry brought him to many schools in the New Orleans-Santa Fe District including St. Peter’s College in New Iberia, LA, Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, NM, Kirwin High School in Galveston, TX, and St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe, NM. He also as ministered as infirmarian at De La Salle Christian Brothers in Lafayette and St. Michael’s School Community in Santa Fe. In addition, he served as District Archivist in Lafayette. He retired at St. Paul’s School Community in 1995. Brother Abel was a deeply spiritual man. There was a beautiful contemplative side in his spiritual life. He could carry on long religious conversations with his confreres. Among his favorite authors were Father Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Katherine De Hueck , Jacques Maritain and Raissa Maritain. His hobbies reflected his love of nature. When stationed in Santa Fe, he loved riding the canyons of the area on his horse Windy. Another hobby was whittling in which he was very accomplished. Besides his religious carving, he carved many of God’s creatures including birds, dogs, horses, bears, bison, mountain lions and cowboys. In addition, he loved good Western books and movies. He was one of John Wayne’s biggest fans. Brother Abel will be missed by his religious community, relatives, friends and his many students. Everyone loved Pop! The Brothers are grateful for the staff of R& R Nursing and Hospice Compassus for the wonderful care they gave Brother during his final illness. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place in Our Lady of Peace Chapel at St. Paul’s School in Covington, LA, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 22, 2012.
