Gaines, age 88 of Madisonville, LA, died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Mr. Gaines was raised in Varnado, LA and graduated valedictorian from Varnado High School in 1940. He graduated from LSU with BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Economics. His education at LSU was interrupted by military service during WWII with the U.S. Army’s 99th Infantry Division, during which he served in the European Theater and participated in several major battles. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor in combat during the Battle of the Bulge. After discharge from the Army, he resumed his education at LSU in 1946 and graduated in 1948. After graduation, his first employment was as assistant professor of agriculture economics at Mississippi State University. In 1951 he joined the Rice Millers Association, with offices in New Orleans until 1956, and then in Washington D.C. He served with the Rice Millers Association for 25 years, retiring in 1976 as president and CEO. Mr. Gaines was chosen honoree at the International Rice Festival at Crowley, Louisiana in 1975. While working at Washington D.C., he met and married Lillian Mary Lemucchi, a native of Washington D.C., who was his wife and companion until his death. After early retirement in 1976, he returned to his native Louisiana, to Folsom, where he operated a cattle farm; a restaurant; and served as market consultant for years under the name Gaines Realty. In time his attention turned to publishing, leading him, with assistance from his wife, Lillian, to establish and operate the Folsom World, a weekly newspaper that served the Folsom community. During that time, he also served as area reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. At Folsom, he was vice chairman of the Northwest St. Tammany Civic Association and organized a project to pick up litter on a nine mile stretch of Highway 25 from Covington to Folsom. Failing health lead to discontinuing business activities, selling his Folsom properties, and moving to Madisonville in 2003. At Madisonville, he continued his publishing interests on a part time basis, publishing The Rice Market Letter, which focused on analysis and prediction of the domestic and international rice market. Mr. Gaines is survived by his wife, Lillian M. Gaines and 3 sons – Walton Jay Gaines, John Edward Gaines, and Joe William Gaines. He has 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433.
