JOAN SASSEEN SEVERS, of Slidell, LA, passed away peacefully at her home on 
Thursday, January 17, 2013.

Joan is survived by her husband G. E. “Jim” Severs; daughters Mary Macynski, 
Kathleen Magee, Joan Schlagheck, Anne Henrikson, and Betsy Campbell; sons, 
Joseph, Thomas, and Paul Severs; brother Robert Sasseen; and sisters, Betty 
Mongeon and Regina Sasseen.

Joan was pre-deceased by her daughter Margaret.

Joan has 20 grandchildren. Joan retired after 21 years as an elementary school 
teacher at St. Margaret Mary School. She has been a member of the St. Margaret 
Mary Parish for 40 years. She has served in the church choir, Hospital 
Visitation Ministry among other activities. Joan was awarded the Slidell 
Memorial Hospital Humanitarian Award in 1985 and the Archdiocese of New Orleans 
Regina Matrum Honor in 2001. In 2003, she received the Volunteers of America 
Award for Mother of the Year. Joan coordinated the local chapter of The 
Compassionate Friends for 8 years, helping grieving parents.
Joan was also a recreational bowler and was noted for her cheerful outlook on 
life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Margaret Mary Church or 
School.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at 
HONAKER FUNERAL HOME, 1751 GAUSE Blvd. WEST (IN FOREST LAWN CEMETERY), Slidell, 
LA on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will also 
be held on Monday, January 21, 2013 at St. Margaret Mary Church, 1050 Robert 
Blvd., Slidell, LA from 9:00am until 11:00am followed by a Mass of Christian 
Burial.

Interment will be held privately at a later date.
