He was born January 31, 1933 in Columbia, MS to late Howard Leroy and Donna Sorrell Simmons. He was the beloved father of five children: Deborah Ann Simmons, Donna S. Douglas, Janice S. Wills, David Simmons and the late Mark Simmons; he was the brother of Evelyn White and the late Janice Byrd. Eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive him. Mr. Simmons grew up Bogalusa, LA. He was educated in the public school system there from 1939 until 1950, when he joined the US Navy. He served his country as a Seaman until 1955 and received the UN Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After his discharge from duty, he began a career as an electrician and over the years the work took him to Texas, Florida, Georgia and back to Louisiana. Employed by Central Power & Light in Corpus Christi, TX he was Stores Supervisor there for over 10 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #278 from 1969-1995 and since his move to St. Tammany Parish, has been a dedicated parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington, LA. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral mass at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 25, 2013 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave., Covington, LA 70433 with visitation at church on Monday beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment with military honors will immediately follow mass at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Covington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital U.S. Veteran ===================
