G. Howard Dearing passed away on May 4, 2013, at his home near Mandeville, 
Louisiana, surrounded by his loving family. 

He was the beloved husband of Rita Derise Dearing, with May 2nd marking their 
60th anniversary. He was the loving father of eight children, seven of whom 
survive him: Ann D. Whitman (Gordon), Mark H. Dearing (Joan), Linda D. Goudeau 
(Marc), Brian D. Dearing (Sharon), Bruce G. Dearing, Kathryn R. Dearing and 
Richard P. Dearing. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy D. Midgley of 
Newkirk, Oklahoma; 13 grandchildren (Phillip, Daniel, Stephanie, Paul, Casey, 
Catherine, Marie, Elizabeth, Marc, Julia, Emily, Max and Alex); and 8 great-
grandchildren (Adam, Scott, Mae, Nora, Alex, Ava, Bella and Spencer). 

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Henry Dearing, Jr. and Lula Mae 
Pringle; a daughter, Derise M. Dearing; a grandson, Jackson H. Goudeau; four 
sisters, Edith Dearing, Frances Dean, Margaret Eaton and Christine Gerards; and 
three brothers, Lester, Fred and Willis Dearing.

Born in 1924 on a farm near Wellington, Kansas, he grew up in Newkirk, 
Oklahoma. He attended Newkirk High School, serving as class president each 
year. Following high school, Mr. Dearing enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was a 
hospital corpsman aboard a minesweeper during World War II. After the war 
ended, he attended Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University), graduating in 
1948, and then the University of Oklahoma College of Law, graduating in 1951. 
That year, he moved to New Orleans to start his career with The Standard Oil 
Company of California (Chevron), which would span 38 years. Among the various 
positions he held with Chevron were Legal Consultant, Assistant Manager of 
Natural Gas Utilization, Assistant to the Vice President of Government and 
Industry Relations, General Manager of Gas Sales and General Manager of the 
Land Department, working in the New Orleans, Lafayette and San Francisco 
offices. In 1985, he was a member of Chevron’s Gulf Oil Company acquisition 
team that oversaw negotiations in the largest corporate merger in history up to 
that date. Following his retirement from Chevron in 1988, he spent a year as a 
land representative with Elf Aquitaine Operating Company and then several years 
as an oil & gas consultant.

Residing in the Mandeville area since 1970, Mr. Dearing was active in several 
civic, professional and service organizations, notably St. Tammany Water 
District #3, serving as president for over 30 years; the Riverwood Men’s Group, 
serving as its President for many years; the 4th Ward Recreational District; 
Junior Achievement; and president of various Parent-Teacher Associations. He 
was a parishioner of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville and 
served as its representative on the Board of Directors for the Samaritan 
Center. He was an avid tennis player and for several years was the men’s tennis 
coordinator at the Covington Country Club. He was a longstanding member of the 
Dixie Legends Men’s Tennis Group, which was founded by a tightknit circle of 
his closest friends. He enjoyed his family and was proud of his family’s 
accomplishments. He lived a full and enjoyable life with his love, Rita, and 
was ready to make his peace with our Heavenly Father.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 
11:00 AM on Friday, May 10, 2013 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 West 21st 
Avenue, Covington, Louisiana, with visitation on Friday morning from 9:00 AM 
until Mass time. 

Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of 
America, 322 Eighth Ave., 7th floor, New York, NY 10001.
