She was born on February 10, 1937, in New Orleans to Louis Philips and Thelma Winters, and grew up in Gentilly. She married William J. Jacobs Jr. and they had five boys. She was always very proud of her boys and was always there to help, support, and advise her sons and had a strong dedication to their success. She equally gave her love to her grandchildren and enjoyed many wonderful days watching them play and swim in the pool when she lived at the Gatehouse Apartments. The closest person in her life was her sister Irma. They were inseparable and shared many great times together. She was well known for the artistry she expressed in the custom gift wrapping for the presents she would give to those she loved. Most were paper grocery bags decorated with smiley faces, ribbons, and pasted pictures of the favorite things of the receiver of the gift. If one ever received one of these, they probably recall the wrapping much more than the gift that was enclosed. Thelma was a great dancer and five sons gave her a great supply of dance partners. She frequently attended the dances at the Jefferson-Orleans. She loved to have a good time and most would agree that Mardi Gras was one of her favorite times. She’d dress up in one of her flamboyant dresses with colors and sparkles galore. Her favorite colors were mostly purple, green, and gold, and she would lead the second line with one of her custom decorated umbrellas. From sequin skirts to gold shoes and artistically decorated shirts, the common question for most celebrations would be “what will Thelma be wearing?” She had a deep love for Christ and a strong faith in God. A phrase she liked to say was “God works in mysterious ways.” On Sunday, she would wake up her boys in the most energetic way by singing “Good Morning to You” and putting her fingers in their ears and if that didn’t work, she would resort to the water treatment. She’d make sure her family was dressed and looked presentable for the ever so early 8 o’clock mass. She worked hard to instill the values of Christ in her sons and taught her boys to be righteous, honest, and compassionate towards those less fortunate. Thelma loved to talk. She never met a stranger and could talk to anyone. Many were familiar with her warm and caring personality; she would help those in need with love and compassion. Even in the early time of her dementia, she tried to bring a little light to the people around her. When her sickness advanced and she lost the ability to speak and walk, she still managed to make friends and capture the hearts of those around her with her smiling eyes. Much to the testament of her tenacity, a doctor said she outlived her diagnosis by 5 years. She sought peace throughout her life and always tried to spread love and kindness to those she met. We will all miss her laugh, her dancing, her artistry, and her fashion sense. May God bless her and keep her and we look forward to seeing her smiling eyes in Heaven again. She’s survived by her 4 sons: William M. Jacobs, Richard T. Jacobs and his wife Robbie, Mark S. Jacobs and his wife Dee, Kirk L. Jacobs and his wife Karen and 2 Brothers and 3 sisters: Louis M. Philips, Jr., Irma M. Wichterich, Michel N. Philips, Angela Lubin, Sue Ann Kuhlne, and she’s also survived by 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She’s preceded in death by her youngest son the late Philip J. Jacobs and her brother the late Stanley C. Philips. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral.
