She was born in Hogeye, Arkansas, on August 29, 1922. She is survived by her husband, Will, who she married in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1943 while he was serving in the Army. She spent much of her life in Bakersfield, California and moved to Covington in 1994 to be with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband; four children: Brenda Barnes, Phyllis Penland, Will Powers Jr., and David Powers; and 8 grandchildren: Todd Penland, Traci Penland, Dawn Ambrose, Kristin Peterson, Michael McKenzie, Allison Cheatwood, Matthew Powers, and Tori Powers. She was great-grandmother of at least 7, Autumn McKinsey, Aiden McKinsey, Joe Ambrose, Marlowe Ambrose, Hanley Cheatwood, Tanner Peterson and Lelia Evelyn Cheatwood. “Granny” as she was called was marvelous with children and at one time had her own childcare business where she cared for several of the children of friends and relatives. She enjoyed gardening especially pruning her rosebushes. She was a fabulous cook but was best known for the amount of butter she could get on a grilled cheese sandwich. She and Will were always active in the Church of Christ most recently with the North Pointe congregation in Covington. Although she could mangle a joke with the best of them (which often made them funnier than the original), she had an insatiable desire to hear a good joke. She will be remembered for her wonderful smile, loving personality and steady disposition. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Monday, February 3, 2014 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 at 2:00 PM with visitation on Monday from 12:00 noon until service time. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mrs. Powers to be made to the St. Tammany Parish Hospital Foundation. ===================
