He was born in Nashville to Louise Pursley Whiteside and George Walter Whiteside, Sr. He attended Issac Litton High School in Nashville and graduated from the University of Wyoming where he was a three year letterman in football and played on the 1951 Sugar Bowl team. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Mr. Whiteside was a Korean War veteran where he was an army pilot, flying both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. He was also a graduate of U.S. Army Ranger School and the U.S. Army Armor School. Following his return from Korea, he served as a flight instructor at Fort Rucker, AL. He then began his professional career, working for Union Carbide prior to moving to New Orleans where he was a principal in the food brokerage firm, Servco, Inc. After living in New Orleans for 19 years, he became a resident of Mandeville, LA for the last 26 years. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Covington, LA and a member of the Cornerstone Sunday School class. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Cantrell ÒBunnyÓ Whiteside, two sons, Dr. Hayes V. Whiteside (Ann), Tuscaloosa, AL and Bates H. Whiteside (Margo) New Orleans, LA and three grandchildren, Eston V. Whiteside, Grace Ann Whiteside of Tuscaloosa, AL and Sadie Bates Whiteside of New Orleans, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Ragan Sue Whiteside and a grandson, Walter Mitchell Whiteside. Honorary pallbearers are John J. Hollins, Sr., Willard O. Lape, William Allen, Dan Kelley, William Tomlinson and the men of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial services at 12 Noon on Friday, February 28, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Covington, 16333 Highway 1085, Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours at the church Friday will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place at the Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, TN on Monday, March 3, 2014. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Youth Fund at The First Baptist Church of Covington, 16333 Highway 1085, Covington, LA ===================
