Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2014/st1403.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Amos Oris Cowart, 87 and a resident of Covington, LA, died Friday, March 21 at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, LA. He was born in Bush, LA, to the late Vaughn and Margana Cowart and was raised on the family farm. He was preceded in death by his siblings Opal Thomas (Warren), Oleta Kahl (William), and Linton Cowart (Jeannine). He is survived by his brother Vaughn Cowart (Betty) and his beloved wife of 64 years, Claire Jung Cowart. In addition, he is survived by his devoted children Claire Denelle Cowart Taylor (Ben), Roma Claire Cowart Hanby (Dana), and Christopher Dean Cowart. He adored and was deeply loved by his grandchildren Caroline Taylor, Julia Taylor, Ellie Hanby, Alexander Hanby, Kacie Cowart Guerrero, and one great-grandchild, Avery Grace Guerrero, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Cowart served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was commended for his performance in fighting fire aboard the USS Mississinewa. He earned BachelorŐs and MasterŐs degrees from Louisiana State University, where he met his wife and learned to love, appreciate and understand philosophy and poetry. He went on to teach English at the high school level at Anococo High School, Leesville High School, South Lafourche High School, and Mandeville High School and was principal of Fifth Ward Junior High School. He was an inspiring teacher, and many of his students kept in touch with him in later years. After retiring from the education field, Mr. Cowart worked for many years at the golf shop at Covington Country Club. He was an avid and accomplished golfer who served for many years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Louisiana Seniors Golf Association. In addition, he was a wonderful cook known in the family for his cornbread dressing and nourishing soups, as well as a diehard sports fan who cheered for LSU and the Saints. He will be sorely missed by all those he has left behind. Visitation at E.J. Fielding in Covington, LA from 9-11 on Friday, March 28, followed by a short service at 11:00 AM and burial at Cowart Cemetery in Bush, LA.
