She was born on June 21, 1919 in Paincourt, LA to the late Henry J. and Nellie M. Landry. In 1946, Mamie married Walter W. Smith, Jr. and together they had three children, James ÒJimÓ Smith (Jill), Walter Smith (Janet), and Louis Smith (Marianne OÕSheeran). She will be dearly missed by her seven grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Nicholas, Adam, Rosemary, Meridith, and Erica. Mamie was the sister of Nell L. Sullivan of Scituate, MA, Carmen L. Rivere of White Castle, LA, the late Gracie ÒBooÓ Blais of New Orleans, LA, Henry Landry of Donaldsonville, LA, and Rudolph Landry of West Port, CT. At 16, Mamie left Bayou Lafourche for New Orleans to join her sister, both working for the U.S. Navy to help support her widowed mother and siblings. There she met a young naval officer, and, as war ended, began her 65 year marriage to Walter W. Smith, Jr. of Lynchburg, Va. They raised and educated three sons in Metairie, LA. Later, Mamie returned to work, and retired from the U.S. Gen. Services Admin. Mamie and Walter retired to Mandeville in the early 1990Õs. Mamie devoted herself to her husband and family, asking nothing for herself, wanting nothing for herself. Never jealous, never proud, she knew only to serve and to smile at all who met her. She was an exemplary mother, and much loved by those who knew her. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial and Catholic Prayers on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 at 10:45 AM with visitation from 9:00 AM until service time ===================
