He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Alma Smith; by his wife of 38 years, Linda Brightbill Smith; and by his companion of nine years, Ann Courrege. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie E. Smith, and a son, Martin A. Smith, III. Born to farmers in Boyce, Louisiana, he quickly learned that the farming life was not for him. He was an avid reader and was valedictorian of Boyce High School. He worked his way through undergraduate school by becoming a short order cook, and went on to get his law degree from LSU. In 2013, he became a Golden Tiger, 50 years after receiving his law degree. He first moved to Slidell in the early 1960s, working for the Fritchie Law Firm. He soon founded his own law firm, Martin A. Smith, and Associates. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association for over 30 years. He was a founding member of the Slidell Bar Association. During his years at LSU, he was also enlisted with the U.S. Army and became a Captain in the Reserves. An avid sailor, Mr. Smith was a past member of the Pontchartrain Yacht Club. He was a member of Poor ManÕs Yacht Club as well as Tammany Yacht Club, where he served as Commodore for two years. He captained his boat, the La Vie, in a regatta to Cozumel. Years later, he piloted his yacht, the Sea Breeze, to Cuba. Mr. Smith also enjoyed Carnival and was a past member of Pete FountainÕs Half- Fast Walking Club. He was also a past member of the Krewe of Perseus, where he reigned as King Perseus XIII. A memorial service will be held at Honaker Funeral Home on Friday, June 6, 2014, at 1:00 pm.
