A life resident of Covington, LA, he was born on Tuesday, February 12, 1946 in New Orleans, LA to Evangeline Messersmith and Carl Christian Cleland, Sr. The beloved husband of Cynthia Lee Cleland for 21 years, he is survived by his daughter - Leslie Cleland Hano (Les); two sons - Gary W., Jr. (Maggie) and Matthew C. Cleland; two sisters - Gail Gosch and Carolyn Strain; his brother - Carl Cleland, Jr.; three step children - Trey Patterson (Jennifer), Russell Koepp (Jaimee), Kathryn Koepp, and 13 grandchildren - Lydia Hano Kolb, Lacey Hano, Emily, Matthew, Jr. and Henry Cleland, Alex, Emily, Adam and Evan Patterson, Russell, Jr., Jacob, Isabella and Mia Koepp. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, the mother of his children - Susan Laitinen Cleland. Gary joined the Navy in 1966 and served two tours in Vietnam on the USS Kearsarge as a member of the Brownwater River Rats. After leaving the Navy, he returned to Louisiana and worked as a mail carrier for the Covington Post Office for 35 years. He also served as a Post Commander for the local American Legion in the early 1970Ős. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 18, 2014, at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours on Monday will begin at 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Fund.
