Clay Prieto, life-long resident of Mandeville, LA. passed away on Sunday, October 5, 2014. He was a significant presence in Mandeville well beyond his more than 40 years as a real estate broker and attorney, His beloved wife of 14 years, Gerardine ŇJeriÓ Vuscovich Thorne Prieto, survives him. For 41 years he was married to Marietta Hansbrough Prieto, the mother of his children - Malise Prieto (husband- Rick Deluane), Clay Prieto (wife-Roslyn Prieto and her son/grandson-Robin Gainey, Jr. and Robin III), Ernie Prieto (wife-Cindy Lockfield) and daughter-in-law, Zan Nichols Prieto, three grandchildren - Calla, Emily and Harrison Prieto; two step-daughters - ReneŐ Thorne Bullington (husband-Paul) and Robin Thorne Huffman (husband-Stokes) and their children Đ Molly Mueller, Mary Elizabeth and Adam Huffman. He is also survived by two sisters - Joan Prieto Doolittle and Mary Prieto Golden. Born in New Orleans, he attended Our Lady of the Lake Grammar School, and thus began a lifelong act of loyal service to the Catholic Church devoted to sharing his faith with others. Prieto served as a lector, commentator, Eucharistic Minister, and participated in numerous prayer groups for the church. Dear to his heart was the annual journey to Manresa Retreat House in Convent, LA. where he served as co-captain of Group 40. A graduate from St. PaulŐs School with the Class of 1953, he was a notable high school athlete lettering in basketball, football and track and field. His talents earned him a basketball scholarship to the University of Miami and induction into the St. PaulŐs School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Prieto was selected Alumnus of the Year in 2007 for his dedication and commitment to St. PaulŐs. While at the University of Miami, he lettered in basketball for three years and joined the Army ROTC which later commissioned him as 2nd Lieutenant. In 1957, he graduated with a BachelorŐs Degree of Business Administration in Management and was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and Scabbard and Blade. In the years that followed he continued his military service with the Louisiana Army National Guard and US Army Reserve. During his 13 years of service he became a leader in a number of Battalions serving in the Ranks as Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Captain. He started with Company B, 141st Anti-Aircraft Battalion, served Troop B, 139th Cavalry in Covington and finally at Headquarters, 205th Engineering Battalion in Bogalusa. In 1968 he graduated from Loyola University of the South Law School in New Orleans and began practicing law in Mandeville and Covington. Through the years he owned and operated Prieto Realty, served as property manager, Notary Public and co-owner of Prieto Marina. He was a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, St. Tammany Board of Realtors, Mandeville Planning and Zoning Commission, Northlake Mandeville Rotary Club, Mandeville Jaycees, Greater Mandeville Chamber of Commerce among others. Mr. Prieto was a believer in the mission of the Christian Brothers and the St. PaulŐs School, a generous supporter of Catholic based charities and local organizations focused on helping those in need. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial mass at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 W. Causeway Approach. Mandeville, LA 70471. Visiting hours will begin at the Church on Saturday at 1:00 PM. Interment at the Mandeville Cemetery will follow the mass.
