He was born on April 8, 1934 in Little Rock, AR, grew up there, played a lot of golf, and attended Hendrix College for two years before transferring to the Univ. of Ark, Fayetteville, where he earned his BBA in 1955. He accepted a scholarship to grad school and as part of his scholarship he also taught a course in Sophomore Economics. In 1956 he earned his MBA from the Univ. and was graduate cum laude. He worked for Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma and then with Maryland Casualty Co. near Baltimore. His heart remained in the South, however, and he transferred to the New Orleans Maryland Casualty Co. There he met the love of his life, Doris Shelby. Later he joined Paul Leaman & Co. in New Orleans as VP, Insurance Agent and Broker, and was there from 1966-1995. A life-long resident of New Orleans, he relocated to Mandeville after Hurricane Katrina. Married in 1960, Gene is survived by his wife of 54 years, Doris Shelby Singer of Mandeville; his sister Anne Singer St Pierre of Concord, CA.; niece, Babette St. Pierre-Casad of Vallejo, CA.; nephew, Bobby Shelby (Nancy); two grand-nieces and one grand-nephew, all of Mandeville, LA. Gene was a very loving, generous, devoted and honorable man. Words are inadequate to describe how much he was loved, and, how much he will be missed. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours on Saturday will begin at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local charity of choice. ===================
