Smith, III, age 73, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Coach Smith was a native and lifelong resident of Covington. He was born in Madisonville on June 28, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred V., Jr. and Etta Smith. Beloved husband of Cheryl Drinkard Smith for 45 years of marriage. Survived by sister, Margaret Bruhl and brother, Bill Bryson. Father of sons, Brad, Scott and Todd Smith. Father in law of Pauline Smith, Catherine Smith and Amy Finch. Grandfather to nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Coach Smith was a graduate of Covington High School in 1960, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He lettered five years in football, was a member and starter on the state champion AAA basketball team in 1960. He also was district track champion in the 100, 200 meter and javelin as a senior. He lettered in track at Southeastern Louisiana University. Upon graduation from SLU, in 1964, he returned to Covington High School as a teacher and coach. For the next 38 years, he coached and taught at CHS, coached football, track and cross-country. The Lion’s were state champs in 1976 in football. Coach Smith was the head Football coach from 1996-2001, winning 70% of their regular season games, twice going 9-1. The Lions were State Cross Country Champs in 1971, 1983 and 1984. The track team won the district titles 18 times in the 31 years that Smith coached them. Coach retired from CHS at the end of the 2001 season. He began teaching again after a year and a half in elementary schools in Slidell for five years. During those years, he was an assistant football coach at Fontainebleau High School for five years. Coach loved his work teaching and coaching. Working with young people was important to him. He loved Covington High School and athletics so much. It was never a job to him. It was a passion. He also loved his ten acres north of Covington. Those ten acres kept him busy. His other passion was his family. Seeing all of them successful and happy was very important to him.
