Please go to http://usgwarchives.net/la/sttammany/obits/dateobits/2015/st1504.htm and click to view list of photos. ========== Cyril “Cy” Arthur Buchert, Jr. passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at the age of 92. He was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a resident of Covington since 1970. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Mildred “Millie” Williamson Buchert and five of his children, Cyril Arthur Buchert (Janet), Dianne Buchert Lind (Michael), Kenneth Paul Buchert (Catherine), Ronnie Charles Buchert (Janet), and Laurie Buchert Heck (Ricky), 13 grandchildren, and 19 great- grandchildren. He his preceded in death by his son, Donald John Buchert, his parents, Cyril Arthur and Catherine Genovese Buchert, his sister, Catherine Buchert Morgan, and his brother, George Joseph Buchert. “Cy” grew up in the Irish Channel. He attended S.J. Peters High School where he was a track standout in 1940. He served in the 5th Air Force as a Tech-Sergeant in the Jolly Roger Bombing Group during World War II; 1943-1945. He served as a radio operator-gunner aboard a B-24 Liberator and completed over 40 combat missions in the Pacific Theater. After the war he returned to New Orleans to raise his family. He attended Tulane University for two years which led to a career with the Internal Revenue Service. He retired after 35 years of civil service. “Cy” was an avid supporter and volunteer with youth sports programs in New Orleans and Kenner. After retirement “Cy” continued to stay active and competed in the Senior Olympic Program for over 20 years. He was inducted into the Louisiana Senior Olympic Hall of Fame in 2000. He volunteered for many years at Lee Road Jr. High School, Pitcher Jr. High School, Covington Elementary School, and many Track and Field Events. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus, The American Legion, New Orleans Track Club, and a parishioner of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 17, 2015 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 125 E. 19th Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visitation on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st. Ave., Covington, LA 70433. Interment in Barker-McManus Cemetery.
