Born on March 4, 1938 in New Orleans to Beatricia and Homer Lane Ford. Upon graduating from Fortier High School she went on to study violin and voice at Louisiana State University. In 1957, Lane met Bill Smart at his parents' house in New Orleans during his sister Lucile's wedding shower. They married shortly after in 1958, and settled in Covington. Together they raised four children and were well known residents of Covington. Bill passed away in 1996, after a battle with cancer through which Lane was at his side. Lane worked part time with Bill in his company for many years, and after Bill's death worked full time until 2005 with their son Will. She also had a shop on Lee Lane in the 80's. Lane was known for her warmth and welcoming spirit. Her home was always filled with family, friends, and friends of friends. She was a great lover of music, gardening and cooking with family. She loved the LSU Tigers and the Saints and was thrilled to see them win the Super Bowl. Lane is survived by four children and eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth Lane Smart Schwoboda (husband Paul Schwoboda) and children Matthew Paul Schwoboda and Allison Graham Schwoboda; William Graham Smart (wife Martha Tschimperle Smart), children Graham Tschimperle Smart and Lucile DeLauriers Smart); Thomas Ford Smart (wife Emily Fettig Smart), children Madeline Jewell Smart, William Theodore Smart, Adam Thomas Smart, Charles Lohmeier Smart; Ellen Lucile Smart Dice (husband Andy Dice), children John Alexander Dice, Nathan William Dice, Allison Elizabeth Dice).
