Jerry was a native of Reform, AL and a resident of Meraux, LA and Covington, LA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Martha Connell and his father, Claudie Elijah Wheat. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Valerie Serpas Wheat of 44 years; daughter, Kelly W. Harris (Jamie) and a son, Kris Wheat (Chantal). Loving “Pop Pa” to five grandchildren; Cameron Gonzales, Lauren Grace and Austin Harris, and Jake and Evan Wheat; his brother, Walter Hullet Wheat (Pat) of Reform, AL; sister, Doris Faye Thornton (the late Sonny) of Montgomery, AL; brothers-in- law, Justin Serpas (Debbie), Valance Serpas (Hyacinth), and Wallace “Dee Dee” Serpas, Jr. (Virginia); and sister-in-law, Patsy Serpas Romero; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Jerry came to St. Bernard Parish in the late 60’s and worked at the Southern Natural Gas Company where he retired after 30 plus years. Jerry was a friend to everyone and will truly be missed by all. The family would like to thank St. Tammany Hospice, Pastor Jeffery Simms, Dr. Surendra Purohit and staff, Dr. James Carinder and staff, the many workers at the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center along with the other doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists, etc. at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Regency Hospital and his wound care nurse, Mrs. Chole. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at Bagnell & Son Funeral Home, 75212 Lee Road, Covington, LA on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 12:00 pm.
