All who knew her were challenged and encouraged to always stand for what is right. Her favorite roles were wife, mom and “Grammy”. She concluded her courageous battle with cancer and leaves a legacy of loving her family and friends well. Betty is survived by her husband of 46 years, Joe Calahan; their children: Cheri Work and husband, Matthew, of Brentwood, Tennessee; Christine Smith and husband, Jason, of Flower Mound, Texas; five grandchildren: Abby, Cooper, Courtney, Connor, and Cody; her brother, Richard Topp and wife, Debra, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Loraine Topp, of Gulfport, Mississippi; brother, Shelby Topp, of San Francisco, California. Betty was born on February 7, 1947, in Clarksdale, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969 with a degree in Education. She married Joe, her college sweetheart, in 1969. After moving to New Iberia, Louisiana, Betty began working as a high school teacher. While living in New Orleans she transitioned to her life’s greatest work of raising their two daughters. She was an active and dedicated member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church serving on the Care Team and volunteered in groups that supported her community such as Junior Auxiliary, MADD and Keep Slidell Beautiful. A memorial service is scheduled to celebrate the life of Betty Calahan at 4:00p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Slidell, Louisiana with a reception to follow.
