Cashio, 94, of Slidell, LA, born, October 9, 1921, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, in Gretna, Louisiana. Beloved husband the late Vivian Perkins Cashio by first marriage, and the late Jane S. Cashio by second marriage. Father of the late Nunsel John Cashio; Father-in-Law of Linda Cashio; Son of the late Nunsel and Esther DiLeo Cashio. Brother of the late Sarah Zito, Corinne Martinez, Mary Cashio, Esther Angelica and Marie Louise Angelica. Also survived by 2 grandchildren; Leslie Cashio and Glenn Cashio; great- grandfather of Ursula St.Romain and Lisa Agoglia; uncle of Godchild Ann Compagno (Tony), Carl Angelica (Susan), Cynthia Sherman (Eddie), Robin Angelica, Sharon Reine (Terry), and the late Christopher Angelica and Carol Michel; also survived by a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews, and his beloved Olivia Angelica Smith. Sir Knight John Cashio joined the United State Marine Corps in October of 1943 and, Was assigned to the 1st Marine Division. On September 15, 1944 he was part of the assault on the Pacific island of Peleliu. The 1st Marine Division, brave men one and all, received the Presidential Unit Citation for their actions on the Island of Peleliu. John was presented with a Purple Heart Medal for wounds suffered during that battle, and he was granted a medical discharged from the Marine Corps in June of 1945. John lived in Slidell since 1984 where he retired, in 1990, from Fleet Financial Company. He was initiated into the Knights of Columbus on March 1, 1990 and he received his 2nd and 3 rd Degree in April of 1991. As a member of Council 9973 John served as Deputy Grand Knight, and served as Inside Guard. John was a Charter Member of the Francis X. Seelos 4th Degree Assembly 2321 and held the office of Faithful Purser for the Assembly. He was also a valued member of our 4th Degree Assembly Color Guard. John has been recognized, in many ways, for his service to the Knights of Columbus, Council 9973, and Assembly 2321. John and his Wife, Jane, were named the Knights of Columbus Family of the Month several times and he received the Knight of the Year Award on two separate occasions. The Order of Merit of the Fourth Degree was presented to John by the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2321, Dave Lemaire, in 2003. The dedication John has shown to St. Luke The Evangelist Parish and to our Catholic Community has also been acknowledged. In recognition of that commitment, and in appreciation for his service to St. Luke The Evangelist Parish. John received the St. Luke Medallion in July of 1992. Each year two people, from each Parish, are nominated for The Order of St. Louis Medallion for their devotion to the Catholic Church and to the Catholic Community. The Most Reverend Alfred C. Hughes, Archbishop of New Orleans, presented Sir Knight John Cashio with The Order of St. Louis Medallion during services held at the St. Louis Cathedral on May 4, 2003. In addition to his service to the Knights of Columbus, John was actively involved with several other ministries at St. Luke. John was a member of St. Luke since the Parish was formed in 1982, and was an Usher for the 11:00 A.M. Mass on Sunday. He was President of the Seniors Club at St. Luke for three years, and he was the Treasurer of St. Luke Men's Club. John was also a member of the Happy Hour Seniors Club and frequently volunteered to help, SLY, the St. Luke Youth Group. Sir Knight John Cashio was a good friend to all and a fine example of a true Catholic Gentleman. His service made him a vital member of our 4th Degree Assembly and he was an inspiration to those who know him. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 910 Cross Gates Blvd., Slidell, LA 70461, on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 12:00 noon. Friends may visit at the church beginning at 10:00am. Burial of ashes will be in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery in New Orleans. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staffs of Live Oak Assisted Living, Peristyle Residence, and Hospice Compassus.
