Born in Springfield, Illinois, he was a resident of the New Orleans area for 76 years. John served his country as a pilot in the United States Navy. Upon his discharge, he pursued his love of aviation by flying single engine planes, volunteering with Civil Air Patrol, and later, continued his flying hobby as an FAA certified flight instructor/examiner in sailplanes. He graduated from Tulane University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He spent his career in the surety field of the insurance industry. In 1996, he retired from Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland (F&D), where he was the Manager for the New Orleans branch office. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank A. Herman and Florence C. Herman French ; and brother H. Richard Herman. He leaves his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Jean Barkdull Herman. Cherished father of Karen H. Smith (Mark). Proud grandfather of Jonathan and Joseph Broom, and Isabella Smith. Also survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives. Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Service to be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 360 Robert Blvd. Slidell, LA 70458. Visitation begins at 1:00 P.M., church service at 2:00 P.M., followed by a reception on the church grounds in Genesis Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Alexis Brown Whalen Cancer Research Fund at Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center c/o Tom Koempa, 512 S.
