He was an American Citizen and resided in Covington for the past 21 years. He worked for the International Long Shoreman Union on the Waterfront for 30 years and retired in 1993. He loved entertaining guest, cooking, dancing, gardening and hanging out with love ones. The crops he raised were shared with family and friends. He loved his family and never refused helping anyone! He was married to Helen “Queenie” Thompson Cooper for 55 years. Both his 80th birthday and 55th wedding anniversary were recently spent in the hospital while he continued to fight the Asbestos in both lungs. He had 2 children Cindy Cooper Bartholomew and Jason Ivan Cooper, 5 grandchildren Miya and little Jason (brother), Alexis, Allie, and Abby Cooper, a son-in-law Barry Bartholomew Jr., and a daughter-in-law Joy Cooper. He was the oldest of 5 siblings, Ideal Cooper, Wayne Gabourel, Wade Gabourel, Merry Lee Cooper and Ionie Cooper. Virgil will be sadly missed! His family, friends, members of the Faith Temple Church of God of Avondale, LA and the International Longshoreman Union are all welcome to attend his service on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 2:00 PM E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon. Interment in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, adjacent to the funeral home. A celebration of Ivan’s life will be arranged at a later date, for those who would like to attend. Please provide mailing address in the attendance book at the funeral home.
