Leighton was preceded in death by his father, James Jay Nunez. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Pichon Nunez, his sister, Juana Nunez Plaissance, his brother, Lee Durel Nunez, his daughters, Jessica Wood of Edgefield, SC and Jennifer Nunez of Katy, TX, as well as four grandchildren, Ella, Vivien, Cassidy, and Waylon. Known for his bright blue eyes and Santa Claus-like, long beard, Leighton was a brilliant songwriter, talented musician, fine woodworker and all-around artist. A native and long-time resident of Slidell, he made his mark on the music scene in the 70s-90s in local favorites The Crowe Brothers Band, Choupique, and more. Nunez moved to Alaska in the late 90s, where he continued to write and play music in bands like Lousiaska and Leighton and the Loners until 2015. He loved fishing, plants, any work involving wood, and touched the hearts of many with the written word in his songs. He was loved by all who knew him and will be forever missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 1 p.m. at Laura's Park in Slidell. Bring a dish and an instrument to help us celebrate his life.
