She was born October 14, 1921 in Bastrop, Louisiana to Lawrence and Etta Tidwell Calhoun. Jean graduated from Louisiana Tech at the age of 19. She later earned a Master of Arts from Sam Houston State University and a PhD from Texas Women’s University. After raising three children, she enjoyed a successful career as a professor at Louisiana Tech University where the students enjoyed international travels with their beloved Dr. Dykes. Jean spent the majority of her life in Crockett, Texas, where she was active in the United Methodist Church, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and numerous other civic organizations. She was a pillar of the community and will be remembered as a gracious host, a loyal friend, and a feisty bridge player. The family matriarch, her home was a place of celebration for holidays, accomplishments, family gatherings, and delicious food. Her lively discussions, quick wit and infectious laugh made any party fun and made everyone feel welcome. Jean’s lifelong pursuit of knowledge was evidenced by her knowledge of current events, literature, and her passion for travel and adventure. She will be remembered for her grace, style and beauty as well as her indomitable strength. Jean is preceded in death by her first husband, Aubert C. Dykes Jr, and her second husband, Dr. Adelbert Bryan Brown. She is also preceded in death by her son, Dr. Aubert C. Dykes III and grandson, John Alfred Levert III. She is survived by her daughters Pamela Dykes Freeman and Donna Dykes Brown (husband Arthur Brown), her granddaughters Pamela Levert Barfield (husband Derrek Barfield) and Lauren Skinner Beitelspacher (husband Shawn Beitelspacher), and great grandchildren Gabriel St. John Barfield, Avery Katherine Barfield, Sara Levert Barfield, Amelia Ruth Beitelspacher, and Annalise Louise Beitelspacher. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Jean’s faithful caregivers: Felicia, Harla, and Niki, as well as St. Tammany Hospital Hospice and the staff at Christwood, Covington, LA. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at First United Methodist Church, 701 East Goliad, Crockett TX 75835 on Friday, June 17 at 10:00 am. The burial will be private in Farmerville, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, donations to the United Methodist Church of Crockett, TX, (936) 544-2044, are preferred. E.J.
