She was born on December 12, 1927 in Centreville, Mississippi and lived most of her life in the New Orleans area. Beloved wife of August Christopher Ryan. Loving mother of Leslie U. Liuzza (Peter) and Mark C. Unbehagen. Grandmother of Jason Liuzza and Adam Liuzza. Beloved daughter of the late Mabel Kethley Reese and Charles Ray Reese. Sister of the late Charles A. Reese. She was the granddaughter of the late Charles Jasper and Frances Maud Thompson Reese of Amite County, Ms.; and the late Alonzo Kethley and Irene Holt Kethley Davis, natives of Warren County, Ms. Her second marriage was to Ralph Andrew Backer, Jr. who died in 1992. Doris grew up in New Orleans where she attended the public schools, graduating in January 1944 from Francis T. Nicholls High School. She attended Centenary College in Shreveport; Meadows Draughon Business School; and attended evening divisions of both Loyola University in New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana University in Covington. Early on she was employed by the New Orleans Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; later by the Kelly Girl Temporary Service; Dan Milam Engineering of East Jefferson; the Jefferson Parish Times of Metairie, where she was a writer, photographer, and women’s news editor, and, finally as a free-lance writer and photographer appearing in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, New Orleans Magazine, and the News Banner in St. Tammany Parish. Her family and friends were the main focus of her life. A constant joy was maintaining contact with friends of her childhood. Other interests included family history research; music; reading; travel; and surrounding her home with flowers. A member of DAR, Wharton Chapter; United Daughters of the Confederacy, Greg’s Chapter; the American Legion Auxiliary; Abita Springs Senior Citizens Club; and numerous genealogical and historical societies. Her family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of The Trace Senior Living Community and Passages Hospice for loving care and attentiveness. All funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Special Olympics of Louisiana (specialolympics.org). ===================
