Louis A. Heyd, Jr. died peacefully after his courageous battle with cancer on 
Friday, January 27, 2017, surrounded by his family who were sharing their love 
for him. 

“Louie” was happy that just six months ago he was still committed to his labor 
of love for 58 years, the practice of law. 

He was born on November 1, 1933 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was preceded in 
death by his mother and father, Lillian Pritchard Heyd and Louis A. Heyd, Sr., 
his wife, Eleanor Dudley Heyd, and his former wife, Joan Meyer Heyd.

A resident of Mandeville since 2009, Louie is survived by two daughters - Terri 
Heyd Shwartz and Julie Heyd Williamson (Matt); his son - Michael Heyd; four 
step children - Pam Hines, Harry Dudley (Joanne), Billy Dudley (Debbie) and 
Mark Dudley (Leslie); seven grandchildren - Louis and Patrick Shwartz, Mason 
and Clay Williamson, Ashton, Nicholas and Claire Heyd; and five great 
grandchildren.

Louie graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans, served honorably in the 
Marine Corp reaching the rank of Captain, and received his law degree from 
Tulane University School of Law in 1959. As a Marine, Louie was for a time an 
MP in Havana, Cuba and relished arresting drunken and disorderly sailors. He 
was elected to serve two terms as Criminal Sherriff of Orleans Parish from 1966 
to 1974, during which he implemented several prisoner rehabilitation and 
education programs, and was quick to recognize prisoners who could cook well. 
During his tenure as Criminal Sherriff, Louie also served for one year as 
President of the National Sherriff’s Association.

Louie loved all of his furry friends and his current feline companion, 
Annabelle, misses him greatly. Donations in his memory should be made to St. 
Francis Animal Sanctuary or The American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers as 
funeral services will be private. Louie’s memory will be cherished forever in 
the hearts of those who loved him.
