Born August 2, 1921, he was a native of Lexington, MS and a resident of Covington, LA for 52 years until he moved to Baton Rouge in 2012 to be closer to family. He was educated in the public schools in Lexington, MS and at Mississippi State University. David served with the 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment of the 4th Engineer Special Brigade, activated in 1943 at Fort Devens, Mass., as part of the U.S. Army’s special amphibious forces developed during World War II. As a Technician 3rd Grade/high-speed radio operator, he served in a series of amphibious assault operations initiated by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the Southwest Pacific (Bismarck Archipelago, New Guinea and Luzon) during 1944 - 1945, and helped set up a listening station in Sendai, Japan in late 1945 before returning home. In 1950 he married Ruth Eileen Oridge of Lexington and in 1960, David and Ruth moved with their three daughters, Mary, Jane and Anne, to Covington. David was a long-time employee of Lakeview Concrete, Inc. and later was employed for 42 years by Parish Concrete, Inc. where he served as general manager and as a member of the Board of Directors for many years. David treasured his Parish Concrete friends all of whom kept in touch with him during his retirement years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Covington, serving on its administrative board, and was a St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Meals on Wheels volunteer for many years. David loved to read, be outdoors, tend his vegetable garden, barbeque, work in his shop and work in the yard – all the while listening to his “little radio.” He was a skilled carpenter and, along with Ruth, designed and crafted many furnishings, toys and other creations for friends and family, especially for their grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his beloved Ruth, the mother of his children, to whom he was married for 49 years; his first wife and college sweetheart, Julia Beall to whom he was married for only a few months due to her untimely illness and death; and Irene “Maxie” Tyler, his wife and companion in later years. Survivors include Mary Jordan Irving and husband Stephen M. Irving of Baton Rouge, LA; Jane Jordan Gayle and husband Edwin F. Gayle of Houston, TX, and Anne Jordan Crochet and husband Boyd W. Crochet of Baton Rouge, LA; seven grandchildren, Samuel O. Irving and Jacob Irving of Baton Rouge, LA; Heather G. Holdridge and husband Chuck Holdridge of San Antonio, TX, Bridget G. Ground and husband Cody Ground of Austin, TX; Edwin F. “Ned” Gayle of Houston, TX; David W. Crochet and fiancé Erica Moore of College Station, TX; and Douglas W. Crochet of New Orleans, LA; and two great-grandchildren, Sloane and Julian Holdridge of San Antonio, TX. The family wishes to give special thanks to his caregivers during his time in Baton Rouge, including Dvana, Turkessa, Kiscena, Annie, Felicia, Delores and Marilyn, and other loving caregivers. Relatives and friends are invited to attend funeral services at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave, Covington, LA 70433. Visitation on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. Interment at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens will immediately follow services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 203 N. Jefferson Ave., Covington, LA 70433 or Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, 4950 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809. US Army ===================
