Born, November 02, 1938 in Memphis, TN to Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Ward. Survived by her loving companion of twenty years, Ralph Magnus Onstad, and her Daughter - Penelope Schmidt Oliver Stettinius and her husband, Edward Stettinius, and their daughter, Elizabeth Merryman Stettinius of Picayune, Mississippi; and her Son, John Earl Oliver III, his wife, Dr. Angelle Farrell Oliver, and their children, John Earl Oliver IV, and Lilian Marie Oliver of Austin, Texas. She was predeceased in death by her son, David Joseph Schmidt Oliver, and her mother, Doris Walsh Ward. Graduated from Holy Name of Jesus/Mercy High School in 1956 and studied at LSU, where she was selected to stand in the Homecoming Court, then finished her degree in music at Loyola School of Music in New Orleans, LA. Betty will fondly be remembered as the “life of the party”. She was hired by the New Orleans Saints at its founding in 1967 to start their first public relations office. She planned and organized all of the home game half-time shows and hired and trained the first cheerleaders (pre-Saintsations). She jokingly referred to her favorite job as the New Orleans Saints first Cheerleader. She was a proud Conservative leader who served two terms as President of the Mandeville Republican Women. Betty was an avid reader and enjoyed travelling the world, first with her husband of 20 years, John Earl Oliver, Jr, and then later with her best friend, Ralph Magnus Onstad. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Visitation at 11:00AM to be followed by Mass at 12:00 PM on Friday, May 12, 2017 at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1501 West Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA.
