She was born on August 10, 1930 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. She was the last child born to Pascual Bourbon and Trinidad Pitre Bourbon and her siblings include –Antonio and Pascual Bourbon and Gladys Sotomayor. Socorro’s father passed away early in her childhood and her mother brought sewing and embroidery work home to provide for the family. Helping the Sisters of Charity in order to pay for school, Socorro attended Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Academy and considered her education a blessing as the 1948 class Valedictorian. After her mother’s death, Socorro bravely boarded the Waterman Line vessel, Monarch of the Sea, and sailed to New Orleans where the Sisters of Charity sponsored her nursing school education at Hotel Dieu. While she planned to return to Puerto Rico after graduation, a blind date with Stephen Rome followed by marriage changed these plans. Socorro returned to Puerto Rico with Steve for their honeymoon. Socorro did not have much time for nursing, however, because five children were born…beginning with Steve, Jr. in 1953 and ending with Anna in 1961. The beloved wife of the late Stephen J. Rome, Sr., she is survived by three daughters - Darlene Rome Boyne (Donald), Sonia Rome Coppock (Curt) and Geraldine Rome Airriess (Christopher); daughter-in-law - Carolyn Rome; seven grandchildren - Kirsten, Matthew, Cody, Cari, Kaycie, Hannah and Colin; and five great grandchildren - Raya, Benjamin, Rosali, Linnea and Stevie Rose. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter - Anna Maria Rome and one son - Stephen J. Rome, Jr. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral mass at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 3, 2017 at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Visiting hours on Monday will begin at 9:30 AM. Interment at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Metairie, LA will immediately follow mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pennington Biomedical Research Foundation ===================
