She was born on March 31, 1922, in Bluffton, OH to the late Reverend Jacob Quiring and Dorothea Haury Quiring. She graduated from the Horace Mann School for Girls and attended Oberlin College, and then graduated from Ohio State University with honors. She was the weather forecaster for American Airlines and a social studies teacher at Port Jervis High School in Port Jervis, NY. Helene got her Master’s Degree in social work from New York School of Social Work at Columbia University. Helene was then a social worker for Family Services of Milwaukee. In 1948, she married John F. Hartmann, Jr. of New Orleans, who passed away in 1975. Helene became a case worker for Ochsner Hospital and served as a visiting teacher in Orleans Parish. She became a clinical instructor at Tulane University School of Social Work. She worked for 15 years and later retired as a clinical professor of social work for LSU School of Social Work in Baton Rouge, LA. Helene served on the Board of Children’s Bureau for several years while moving to Covington, where she’s been a resident since 1967. She served on the first Head Start Board of St. Tammany Parish and served for many years on the board of Community Concerts of St. Tammany. She served for a number of years as facilitator for foster parents of greater Tangipahoa Parish, and was a member of Mandeville / Covington AAUW since its inception. She was active as a member and Elder of Madisonville Presbyterian Church. She has been a resident of Christwood Retirement Community for the last 10 years. She is survived by 4 children: Carol H. Sprague of Mandeville, Gail H. Brown of Atlanta, John D. Hartmann and Steven J. Hartmann, both of Baton Rouge. She will be missed by 9 grandchildren: Jonathan and Brian Sprague, Katherine S. Dickens, Robert and Sarah Brown, Jeffrey Hartmann, Steven, Stephanie, and Jennifer Hartmann. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren and several nephews and a niece. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Service at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 2:00 PM with visitation from 12:30 PM until service time. Interment will follow the service at Maison De La Paix, New Orleans ===================
