He was born in Galveston, TX on July 14, 1934, to Nancy Kilroy and Patrick Whelton. He attended Kirwin High School in Galveston and graduated from St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. After his five children were grown and he had retired from a long and successful career in the maritime industry, he left his home in New Orleans to embark on the adventure of a lifetime with his bride. Paddy and Elaine sailed the Caribbean for five years before settling back in League City, TX and eventually Abita Springs, LA. He was a devout Catholic, who loved his children deeply. He spoke often of how proud he was of the men and women they had become. His grandchildren were always captivated by his fantastical stories of hitch- hiking, motorcycle antics, and his version of “putting meat on the table.” His zest for weekend fun and adventure often had to be verified by his children, as duck hunting, waterskiing on the Mississippi River, deep sea fishing, and oystering were said to have occurred on the same weekend . . . living out of a tent. He is survived by five children - Michael Whelton, Gregory Whelton, Denise DeFranco, Diane McCarthy, and Bridget Torregrosa; two siblings - Teel McGough and Patrick Whelton; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings – Edward, Ellen, and Rose Marie Whelton; and one son – Dennis Whelton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at 11:45 AM on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at St. Jane de Chantal Church, 72040 Maple St., Abita Springs, LA. Refreshments will be served in the church hall immediately following mass until 2:00 PM. Following a procession from the church, graveside services are scheduled to take place at 2:30 PM at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433. In lieu of flowers, donations to your own church or to St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church in Abita Springs, LA may be made in memory of Maurice "Paddy" Whelton. ===================
