He was the son of Kalil Charles Aswad and the former Pepilia “Peps” Schexnaydre and brother of Jean Aswad Hare, Alan and Roland Aswad. He was 88. A 1947 graduate of St. Aloysius High School (now Brother Martin); Kay enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve and was called to service in the Korean War. In Nov-Dec of 1950, as an anti-tank gunner in the 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marines he fought in the campaign at the Chosin Reservoir. After returning home to New Orleans, he joined the Merchant Marines and spent the next few years “seeing the world”. In 1956, he married the former Carol Aline Falcon, with whom he spent the rest of his life. He graduated from SLI (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) in 1960 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and went on to complete several advanced courses in Power Systems engineering and management. He was employed by CLECO, and spent the entirety of his professional career with that company. Many of the sub- stations he designed are still in use around the state. For the last 25 years, Kay lived in Covington. He devoted much of his time to the Knights of Columbus Council 12072 at Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Mandeville. He was a fixture at their “Friday Fish Fry’s” and Gumbo cook-offs - and was willing to do pretty much anything that was ever asked of him. He was also active in the CLECO Retirees Association, and a member of The Chosin Few veteran’s organization. He is profoundly missed by his wife of 61 years, Carol; sister - Jean and sisters-in-law - Doris A. Aswad, L. Fran Falcon and Grace M. Post; his 4 children - Karen Aswad Schneider (Norrie), Kathleen “Kaki” Aswad Wells, Kenneth C. “Kenny” Aswad and Karl J. Aswad (Birona); his 5 grandchildren - Whitley L. Aswad, Brittany Aswad Williamson (Jacob), 2nd Lt. Liam S. Wells (USMC), Scout K. Aswad and Elia A. Aswad; and one great-grandson - Tanner Reid Williamson. He is mourned as well by his many nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his many dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Kay’s life at E. J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Ave. Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, August 18, 2017 from 5 to 8 PM. The funeral mass will take place at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mandeville, LA. Visitation on Saturday will begin at 10:00 AM. Interment at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Metairie will immediately follow mass. E. J. Fielding Funeral Home of Covington has been entrusted with arrangements.
