Steptoe Road may be reached via Hwy 1048 and Roch Road, near the I-55 exit, or from US Hwy 51 in Arcola. Ward 3. T3S R7E Sec 20. GNIS Coordinates: 304637N 903109W Founded 1859. Most of these names are on the South side of the cemetery in the middle under the big trees. This is a partial reading of the cemetery that adds to the list done by Lillian Settoon and updated by Belford Carver and Margaret Stevens. Allmon - born May 9, 1906 - died May 31, 1935 - BURIED AT SEA. Horrace Reginald Arrowsmith - born March 26, 1846 in MALTA - died October 30, 1893. His father was director of public works in MALTA. In 1880 Horrace was in WYOMING. John C. Barker - born September 19, 1848 - died February 1893 - have not found him on a census. Henry Beecher - born December 27, 1822 in CONNECTICUT - died May 21, 1902. His family believes that he died in Connecticut in 1899. He and his wife Julia are on the 1900 Census in Roseland, LA (Henry Bucher). D. C. Blackman - 1834 to 1899 - not found on censuses. H. Booker - that is all it says. Frank A. Bryant - born December 17, 1853 - died December 30, 1913 - cannot find him on the censuses. Alexis Cahow - UNION soldier from OHIO. Adell J Smith Campbell - born October 2, 1862 in WISCONSIN - died May 28, 1902 - shares a stone with her father-in-law David Campbell. David Campbell - born July 7, 1807 in VERMONT - died June 7, 1893 (censuses indicate a later birth date). Mrs. Laura Cassanover - June 25, 1863 to December 13, 1915 - (Might be the aunt of William Carrier) George Eugene Cooke - born July 15, 1858 - died October 29, 1890 - cannot find him on the censuses. Silas Griffin Corken - born September 10, 1879 - died September 4, 1955 - Veteran of the Spanish American War. John W. Cothran - December 29, 1835 in ALABAMA to August 3, 1882. (wife Susan Elizabeth Boulware.). Cynthia Cross - born 1835 in OHIO - died 1913. Jonathan M. Day - born February 17, 1820 in NEW YORK - died December 13, 1907. He was in Illinois in 1880 and his family looses track of him then. He is on the 1900 Census in Roseland, LA as John. His wife Ordelia Stanley Root Day died in 1900. Elizabeth Domburian - an unmarried member of an ARMENIAN family in New Orleans. Lemuel Hall Duncan - 1796 in MARYLAND - June 23, 1871. Served in the War of 1812 - 1st Regiment Mounted Gunmen (Dyer's) Tennessee Volunteers from September 28, 1814 to April 7, 1815. His unit fought with Andrew Jackson at New Orleans. Annie Joyce Dunn - born in IRELAND May 15, 1837 - died April 6, 1914. Hazen Solomon "Hays" Eldridge, Jr. - October 2, 1847 to July 13, 1921. Rivers H. Eldridge - February 26, 1892 to July 6, 1920. Solomon H. Eldridge - born in OHIO in 1806 - died April 1882. Ansel Crary Elsworth - 1842 in OHIO to 1915. Susan Russ Cooper Ensign - born in VERMONT in 1853 - died April 25, 1944. Elwood R. Force - born May 29, 1871 in MICHIGAN - died May 30, 1926. Margaret Jane George - born 1829 in MASSACHUSETTS - died July 21, 1882. Mary Kittridge Goodwin - born October 29, 1840 - died September 19, 1915 - not found on censuses. John Gordon - born January 29 1825 in MARYLAND - died January 5, 1906 - Episcopal Clergyman. Charles F. Gray - born April 1843 in MAINE - died June 23, 1927. Phoebe Gray - born September 1843 in MAINE - June 26, 1926. These Grays never had biological children. Warren A. Grice - born November 30, 1816 in NORTH CAROLINA - died May 4, 1867. He was a Capt. in the 2nd Regiment in P. F. Smith's Brigade of Louisiana Volunteers in the MEXICAN WAR 1846-1848. Clark Warren Hillebert - 1839 in NEW YORK to January 20, 1916. Lucy A. Halling - born April 5, 1822 in MASSACHUSETTS - died September 30, 1890 - not found on censuses. Levi Betts Hatton - born May 10, 1874 - died November 22, 1906 - not found on censuses. Samuel Richard Hatton - born August 17, 1832 in NEW YORK - died May 5, 1898 - not found on censuses. Ernest F. Herwig - born February 17, 1834 in HAITI - died June 16, 1906 - owned the Nicholls Dairy Lunch House Restaurants in Arcola and New Orleans. He has a big and beautiful tombstone. Caroline Briggs Heth - born in PENNSYLVANIA on January 11, 1849 - died July 26 1907 - was in South Dakota in 1885. Thomas S. Heth - born in NEW YORK on July 12, 1844 - died on April 13, 1915 - UNION soldier WISCONSIN - was in South Dakota in 1885. Robert James Hill - born in ENGLAND in 1852 - died July 12, 1895. His family thinks he died in Roseland, Canada. Rhoda Hills - born September 3, 1848 in KENTUCKY - died December 1, 1883. In Kentucky in 1870. In Tangipahoa Parish in 1880, with her parents who disappeared after her death. John F. Hoose - born May 28, 1824 in NEW YORK - died June 10, 1896. His relatives believe that he is buried in MICHIGAN. Lizzie Hoose (born Oct. 23, 1866 and died May 14, 1896) - daughter-in-law of John - wife of his son Demetrius - existence not known by Hoose family. Mark Huselby - born May 14, 1824 in ENGLAND - died February 3, 1900. Lived in KANSAS. Church records in Kansas indicate that he brought his sickly daughter Ada to Arcola for the water. John H. Jaycox - UNION soldier from NEW YORK. Burr S. Kent - born in NEW YORK in 1839 - left New York after the 1920 Census - died in New Orleans August 1, 1921 - buried in Arcola-Roseland Cemetery. Harriet Kent - born in NEW YORK in 1847- lived with her sisters in Roseland - never married - died 1920. Jacob Kent - UNION soldier from NEW YORK - never married. Alonzo A. Lamb - May 23, 1828 in NEW YORK to January 21, 1906. John Landon - born August 18, 1820 - died February 2, 1910 - not found on censuses. Mary Lane - born 1833 NEW YORK - died 1910 - she and her somewhat younger husband Fred came to Roseland from Michigan - after Mary died, Fred went to Kansas J. W. Leonard - born in 1811 - died September 12, 1874 - his people might believe that he is buried in Colorado. Marcel C. Mahot - tombstone written in French - born May, 23, 1881 in FRANCE - died June 29, 1902 - Prier Dieu pour lui - his family arrived in New Orleans in 1892. The family was in Tangipahoa in 1900. His father died in New Orleans in 1923. William B Martin - Union soldier from INDIANA. J. J. McKnabb - Probably John or James or Jesse McKnabb who were sons of W. G. and Lanzy McKnabb in Greensburg, LA 1860. Harriet Rhody Mellor (appears as Miller on censuses) Š born August 18, 1804 in ENGLAND - died January 10, 1889. Catherine McConnell - born May 9, 1929 in SCOTLAND - died September 28, 1914 (age 85) never married - living as a boarder in 1900 and 1910. T. B. Morris - 1806 to January 4, 1870 - not found on censuses. Artemese Hatry Michel (mother-in-law of Ernest F. Herwig) Her husband Marcilin Michel is mentioned on her tombstone and nowhere else that I can find. Mabel Nice - born May 20, 1884 - died October 25 1896 - Daughter of the Reverend Jonas Tyson Nice and Rebecca Longanecker. http://www.gameo.org/encyclopedia/contents/roseland_mennonite_church_new_orleans_louisiana Roseland Mennonite Church (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA) Roseland (Louisiana) MENNONITE Church, now extinct, located 70 miles north of New Orleans, was reported in the Herald of Truth of 1 October 1894. Sunday school and church services were held every Sunday. Their first communion service was observed in October 1894. Jonas T. Palmer - born in NEW YORK on November 17, 1838 - UNION soldier MICHIGAN - homesteaded in NEBRASKA in 1868 - died November 29, 1915. Eliza Paul John Paul (that is all it says and I find no other record of them) Frank Way Peters - 1851 in NEW YORK to 1910. (He, his wife Bertha Beringer Peters, her sister Mary Beringer, and Frank and BerthaÕs lame son Way Beringer Peters, all moved here before 1910 and left no descendants. Jasper Petersen - born February 20, 1822 in DENMARK - died October 3, 1879. His family died out in two generations. Samuel Pope - born in NEW JERSEY on July 14, 1832 - died October 29, 1887. Amos Porter - April 12, 1837 in NEW YORK to June 30, 1918. Charles M.Pulliam - 1856 in GEORGIA to 1923. John Reed - UNION soldier from NEW YORK - said by his family to have moved to Arcola for the "air" - died shortly thereafter (1895). John K. Reichert - born in OHIO on May 22, 1839 - died September 16, 1899. He was in Ohio on the 1880 Census. Minerva S. Lamb Reichert (born 1836 in Ohio and died Jun. 18, 1894), JohnÕs wife. Joseph A. Richardson - UNION soldier NEW YORK - October 1836 in NEW YORK to after 1910. Mrs. C. G. Ridgely - 1812 to January 1, 1883. (Possibly mother of Clarence T. Rivers - their unusual tombstones match.) Rowland J. Robinson - born in NEBRASKA on December 5, 1868 - died March 24, 1901. He was in Nebraska in 1885, in Roseland in 1900, and dead in 1901. Does not appear to have had children. Eliza G. Elton Rogers - born in Sheffield, MASSACHUCETS on May 22, 1830 - died September 5, 1893 - not found on censuses. Conrad Scherer - UNION soldier from NEW YORK - also lived in IOWA and MICHIGAN. John C. Sharkey - born in IRELAND on November 29, 1845 - died on November 18, 1925. Dora Thayer Smith - born on August 20, 1832 in MASSACHUCETS - died on April 2, 1914 - came to Roseland by way of Iowa and Arkansas. Edward J. Snyder - son of Martin Synder and Elizabeth Regenolt of Baden Baden Germany. Edward died on January 5, 1880 of consumption. He was 27. Mrs. Johanne Sommer(s) - born on February 4, 1833 in DENMARK - died December 16, 1910. She was the wife of Mogens Abraham Sommer. He was a Socialist candidate for Parliament in Demark in 1868. (Her descendants spell Sommers with a final "s", but her tombstone clearly lacks the final "s") George W. Stakemiller - born in 1857 in ILLINOIS, died in 1912 - was in Jennings, Louisiana in 1910. Daniel Webster Streat - April 9, 1839 in OHIO to November 29, 1929. Edwin Strong - October 11, 1852 in MISSOURI to November 4, 1929. G. W. Thomas - C.S.A. Sgt. From TENNESSEE. John R. Thompson - UNION soldier from ILLINOIS. Sarah M. Wagnalls - born December 1848 in OHIO - died in 1923. James Burnside Wands - born December 25, 1840 in NEW YORK - died February 1, 1902.
