He was black and the first mayor of Ponchatoula from Sep 3, 1873 to Jan 6, 1874. This park is also in the same area that the Tasker Memorial AME Zion Church is located. He and a group of black citizens who had recently been slaves organized the congregation in October 1867. The first building was erected in 1881, which is located very near the Kiwanis Park. This civic organization has maintained the park since 1950. He is said to have moved to Ponchatoula from the Virginia-Maryland area. His age was given as 39 in 1873 which would make his year of birth about 1834. No date of his death has been found as of this writing. Belford Carver, August 3, 2001.
