According to the map, Vernon Lane ends at or near the creek (How or Haw Branch), and the cemetery is on the other (west) side. There is a locked gate just past an old residence, which belonged to Willie Thomas Hilburn, who died June 11, 2000 and is buried at Line Creek. Attempted on 3/10/01 to find it at the end of Vernon Lane, which now is part of the Big Woods Hunting Club. On 3/17/01 talked with a cousin of Mr. Hilburn, Tim Miller, who lives near this cemetery. He said that there was at one time a tombstone for PRUDENCE DEAN, and 2 or 3 other graves marked with yellow pine pickets, which probably have been destroyed by woods fire by this time. The headstone was removed by a relative, Floyd Dean (now deceased) to be repaired. He died before having it repaired. Floyd Dean was son of Pascal Dean; Prudence was his grandmother. To his knowledge, it has not been repaired or replaced. He suspected that the base was still in the cemetery, if one could get to it today. It is heavily forested. There is no longer a road there. On 3/17/01 also talked with Cheryl McGlothren, Ponchatoula, who said her grandfather purchased the land from the Deans. She recalled going to the cemetery as a child. She gave me the name of Tim Miller. This land has been in their family for at least 65 years. Mr. Miller mentioned that there is a Miller Cemetery near the Dykes Cemetery, in which he has relatives buried. Both on the Ivy Dykes property. Belford Carver 3/17/01 On 3/29/2001, Mr. E. P. McDaniel said that the husband of Prudence Dean was John Dean who left for the Civil War and never returned home. He has been unable to find any records on him. They had a large family of 10 or 12 children. Pascal W. Dean was the youngest and he is buried at Line Creek Cemetery (April 19, 1860 - August 29, 1936); husband of Cora Cutrer Dean. Floyd Dean had a son he named Pascal, who is deceased. S. E. Dean was another son, who owned property in the general area of the cemetery, but in St. Helena Parish. He also told me that the Miller Cemetery is across the line in St. Helena Parish On 4/4/01, Mr. McDaniel called to give me the following information from a publication of the Line Creek Baptist Church, 150th Anniversary, (1989), page 39: Prudence J. Dean, born in South Carolina October 11, 1827 and died November 21, 1891. She had 8 children. She became a member of this church in 1854. -BEC- ************************************************ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/tangipahoa/cemeteries/deanwd1.txt
