Samuel Moss Born in Baltimore, MD Apr 19, 1795 Jun 2, 1867 Corinella, LA 73 yrs of his age This cemetery is no longer being used. [Also reported by the Harts in their book, Tombstone Territory, Vol 1, 1975, page 101, with the location T1S,R7E, Sec. 41, on the Line Creek Road on the old "Ellis Place", now the property of Porter L. Bentley. These markers were found in a large cemetery plot marked off by an iron fence set in concrete. (Stone which reads: "In Memory of Our Mother") Samuel Moss (Mas.) Born in Baltimore, Md. April 19, 1795 Died June 2, 1867 Corinella, La. 73rd year of his age.] (This would place it in NW section of Kentwood, LA. Ward 1) Data input by Belford Carver, 3/7/2001 On 3/16/2001 I visited this cemetery which is on the property of Henry Kinchen, the Kinchen Arena, at 75912 Hwy 1053. He purchased the land in 1990 and is in the cattle business there. The cemetery was originally about 30 x 20 feet and fenced; some of the brickwork framing is still visible. There must have been a large brick tomb there which has completely fallen apart. Apparently other graves are located here, but only two have visible (broken) headstones. The "In Memory..." above refers to EUGENIA P. MASS, wife of M. S. NEWSOM. No dates are visible at this time. A marriage date was found in the LA Marriages CD Rom for 1718-1925. His name was Marston S. Newsom and they married on April 19, 1864. There is a large oak tree at the north end of the plot. There are probably other people buried here. Samuel's name looks like MASS to me. There is a Masonic symbol at the top of his headstone. On the map the section numbers around this area are rather scrambled, but it appears that Section 17 is more accurate for the location. On the quadrangle map for Kentwood (1980) it is marked as "graves". -BEC-
