Recorded by Belford Carver, June 27, 2000 Historical Marker: Peter Hammond 1789- 1870, founded Hammond about 1820, launched a tar and forest products industry, pioneered shipping these products from Springfield and Wadesboro to New Orleans, ran a commissary supplying staples for the people, gave right of way between Hammond and Pass Manchac for the construction of the railroad. Erected in memory of Peter Hammond by his descendants.
