PONCHATOULA CEMETERY
TANGIPAHOA PARISH	- 1935

<Notes by James M. Perrin - Feb. 1999 -  The cemetery property (8.57 acres) 
was purchased in 1896 from Samuel E. Akers, by John W. Bradley, Mrs. Henry J. 
(Sallie Pusey) Lavigne, Jacob R. Abels, and Andrew J. Pusey.  During the Depression, 
it was hoped that federal funds could be used to improve the cemetery.  Since the 
federal workers could not improve private property at public expense, the owners 
donated the cemetery to the town of Ponchatoula in April 1935.  The western side 
of the present cemetery was owned by St. Joseph's Catholic Church and was
referred to as the "Catholic Cemetery."  The two cemeteries have today
grown together.  Since 1935, the city of Ponchatoula has added additional
land to the cemetery, and it now contains about thirteen acres.  The
cemetery is an active burial ground, but there are few plots left to sell
and the remaining lots are restricted to city residents.  >
