ST. JAMES AME NO. 2 CEMETERY, HAMMOND, TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LA Recorded and Submitted to the USGenWeb Archives by Dr. Belford Carver on May 2, 2000 ************************************************ Copyright. It is just south of the Old Covington Hwy (LA Hwy 1067), and just north of I-12, on the west side of the road. There are some 60 graves, of which about half are unmarked or the funeral makers have faded beyond recognition. In a subsequent conversation with Mr. George Gaten, who is in charge of this cemetery, I was told that the church did not have a listing of those buried there. He indicated that he often has urged family members to put headstones on the unmarked graves. Ivy Bell Aug 16, 1888 -Apr 23, 1950 Rev. Howard E. (Mr. Reed apparently visited threecemeteries, St. James, New Star, and Arnold on one visit, and some others in town.) Three graves in west cemetery. (This apparently is on Wilson St., in Hammond.) Lura Latham, daughter of Alfred and Jessica Latham. Albert born Old Latham place now Hwy 190 near Henry Gray place. Albert's grandparents were Alfred and Jessica Latham, Mary C. Latham and Willie Reed parents. Latham family came to Hammond after Civil War (about 1865) and was in timber business. Alfred's grandfather worked for Mr. C. E. Cate. M. C. Latham buried old cemetery on Cook Place -pass airport (first road turn right blacktop) about ‡ mile. Hand hewn timber, sold some to l.c.r.r. bought timber from Cate. Old colored cemetery names: Allen Burtas 1888 -1958 Simpson Robertson 1856 -1923 Horace Robertson 1879 -1937 Ed Robertson 1899 -1948 Phillip Duckett 1859 -1922 (See my entry above.) An additional note was: See Viola Ricks, Coleman Avenue near school. Alfred Reed is Mary Cate Latham's son, oldest daughter of the Alfred Lathams on pine ridge -lived in area near Frank Darouse place. (There was a Pine Ridge Elementary School on what is now Martin Luther King Street.) (In the Wilson Street Cemetery list, there is a Jessica Latham, wife of Alfred Latham, 1851 - 1905.) (I found the first four names above at the New Star Baptist Church Cemetery. I found Phillip Duckett at the St. James AME No. 2 Cemetery. There are some slight differences in the spelling of some names.) (Neither of the daughters of Henry Gray {Malva and Dian}remembered these names. The old Gray home is falling in. It is located next to the Hwy 190 Tycer Ready Mix Concrete Plant today. In an email dated 5/8/2000, Malva indicated that she and Dian sold their part to the Tycers.) (On May 5, 2000, Ronnie Taylor told me his grandmother, Ruby Taylor, is buried here at St. James, but he didn't recall dates or the exact location of the grave.) (As of 5/10/2000, I have been unable to confirm the "Cook Place" mentioned above.) (On 5/11/2000, I visited with Mrs. Stella Remble at the First Guaranty Bank of Hammond, and she confirmed that the Cook Place is next to New Star. She has relatives buried in there, and has an uncle attending this church.)
