Perrin Copyright April 1982 FOREWORD In indexing the 1900 census report for Tangipahoa Parish, the author has attempted to create an accurate and useful tool for historians and genealogists. Because several different census takers recorded the population data for the parish, there are many varieties of script and spelling on the original document. Readers are advised to check for alternate spellings of surnames. Since there were usually one hundred entries on each printed page, there may be more than one listing for a certain name on a page. If any errors are found in this index, please contact the author so that corrections can be included in future additions. TANGIPAHOA PARISH, LOUSIIANA Newest of the Florida Parishes, Tangipahoa Parish is located in the center of southeastern Louisiana. The parish was formed in 1869 from the eastern parts of St. Helena and Livingston parishes and from the western portions of Washington and St. Tammany parishes. Settlement in the area which was to become Tangipahoa Parish was very slow until the construction of the New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern railroad line in the 1850's. Soon after the completion of the railroad line, small towns began to develop where roads crossed the railroad tracks. The destruction caused by the Civil War and the economic disruption of the reconstruction period were followed by increased prosperity in the 1880's and 1890's. An influx of families from the Midwest took place in the 1890's, with many of the families settling in the new town of Hammond. In the 1890's and the opening years of the twentieth century, many Italian families moved into the parish, settling in the area around the town of Indenpendence. In 1900, the main occupations in Tangipahoa Parish were farming, lumbering, and working for the railroad. The parish has shown a steady growth since 1900. The population of the parish in 1982 is about 80,000 persons. 1901. Tangipahoa Parish was divided into eight wards in 1900.
