Church History: Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic, Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana Submitted to the USGenWeb Archives by Don Johnson, Apr. 2001 ************************************************ Copyright. The founding inspiration and continued strength of the community comes from the Risen Christ present in the Eucharist. For this reason, "meal" and the sharing of food and drink have special meaning for us. Our sisters try to touch those areas of society that are in need of the Bread of Hope, Justice and Love. Through the years, the community has developed ministries that express the same founding vision... "Our ZEAL is to carry the invitation and the Lord's message of truth and love to all, especially the neglected poor, the afflicted, the oppressed, and those in any way distant from the Gospel. All age groups and many cultures are served. These women religious provide the core of service with canonical status within the Catholic Church. We also have a young woman in her second year of candidacy that will enter the Novitiate in the summer of 1999. There are 34 lay associates, men and women who have chosen to share prayer, ministry and talent with us. Our Eucharistic Mission extends beyond Louisiana to Mississippi, Florida, Texas and Arizona. Our sisters work in health care, home visitation, religious education, spiritual direction, social work, parish administration and pastoral services. Seventy - one years of service have included ministries to African Americans, Native Americans, Mayans in Guatemala and the Mayan refugees in Southeast Florida, as well as to those Americans of European descent. Usually, we do not enter a place with a predetermined plan, but seek to discover from and with the people what needs to happen. Because we are missionary, we do not own institutions.
