Russ Williams, who has written several books about the Tangipahoa area of eastern Louisiana, prior to 1869 much of the eastern portion of Tangipahoa Parish lay within the bounds of Washington. When Tangipahoa Parish was created, clerks of affected parishes were instructed to send copies of all deeds that pertained to their parish's former acreage to the new parish-seat. This was done by John K. McLain, then Clerk of Court of Washington. These are the copies to be found in Volume W-1 of the Tangipahoa Parish Deed Records. Dr. Williams explains that the originals of almost all of the deeds in this book were destroyed in the courthouse fire in Franklinton in 1897. These copies, then, are in many cases the only records in existence. Richardson, Parish Judge * * * * * * * * * One other deed, Vol. W-1, page 17, is important in establishing Matthew Robertson's date of death. Dated 27 August, 1827, the deed describes land being auctioned to Vincent Price. The land is described as bordering that belonging to Heirs of Matthew Robertson. (See Vincent Price named in the land description in the 1836 document.) Therefore, Matthew died before August, 1827. According to a family Bible, he did in fact die in September 1826.
